A 19-year-old Benny Benson Secondary School student was arrested this morning for possession of a loaded handgun on a school bus.

While driving from East High School to the King Career Center, the school bus driver spotted a weapon on student, Bryan Briggs; the driver quickly contacted school bus dispatch.

According to the Anchorage School District, school resource officers found a loaded .22-caliber handgun in Briggs’ possession.

“I’m grateful that the bus driver immediately reported what she saw, was able to remain calm, take appropriate steps to set the wheels in motion for police action and keep a dangerous situation from escalating,” said ASD Superintendent Carol Comeau. “Our school resource officers are a valuable asset and are appreciated for working diligently to keep our students safe.”

ASD has a zero tolerance policy for weapons on school grounds, which extends to school vehicles. The district says it plans to seek expulsion for Briggs.

Today is the third day back to school in Anchorage.
