Chip Leeper may have accidentally fallen into the position of Nome’s incident commander, but it’s one he is equipped to handle. As both the city administrator and mayor are out of town, Leeper, who usually works in Nome’s Parks and Recreation Department, has found himself working with city staffers and volunteers amid a dangerous sea storm.

One of those deputies is out sweeping Front Street just as daylight is breaking. The storm’s surf is already throwing around rocks that weigh between five and ten pounds, and the main surge of seawater is expected from Norton Sound this afternoon.

This morning, a piece of sheet metal blew off a building and became lodged in some overhead wires, resulting in blown transformers that knocked out cell service and power for about an hour and a half.
