State’s Largest Pumpkin Disqualified At Weigh-OffSoft spot takes 1,723-pounder out of the running It was a disappointing day for Dale Marshall of Anchorage whose giant pumpkin topped the scales at a whopping 1,723 pounds. That would have been a new state record and put Marshall just 80 pounds shy of a new world record. Fair officials disqualified Marshall’s entry after it was found to have a soft spot that ran deep inside. A spokeswoman says, while unfortunate, the judges are bound to honor the international rules set by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth since the Fair is one of just a handful of sanctioned weigh sites in the country. Wednesday’s title went to the second heaviest pumpkin, grown by JD Megchelsen of Nikiski. His entry topped the scales at 1,287 pounds, enough to shatter the old state record. |

What does a soft spot have to do with the judging?
