ANCHORAGE - We hate to break it to you, but mermaids are not real, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which released a statement denying the existence of mermaids.

These mythical, half-human, half-fish creatures known as mermaids have been around since the Stone Age, seen in early paintings.

Since then they've captured the imagination of every culture through movies, and books and have become a fantasy for children.

For others, they’ve become a fascination.

“There have been supposedly sightings of mermaids around the world, but no one has ever had proof of a mermaid,” said Naomi Reese, who said she believed in mermaids as a child.

Mermaids have gotten more attention lately because of a recent documentary released by Animal Planet and several other films that investigate alleged scientific evidence of mermaids.

Shortly after the film aired emails poured into NOAA asking if any of it was true.

NOAA responded by releasing a statement saying mermaids don't exist and no evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found.

“It’s sad, almost makes me want to cry,” said Gwen Perry, from Louisiana.

Some said it'll take more than just words to change their mind.

“Show me I want to see in proof that they have it, don’t have it,” said Nam, an Anchorage resident.

So whether there's mermaids or not in our oceans, will be left up to you to decide.
