State Will Help HIV-Positive Residents Get TreatmentFederal funding provides free meds for qualifying patientsANCHORAGE - The state of Alaska is trying a new approach to make sure people who are HIV-positive get the care they need, and lessen the risk that they could be passing that virus on to others. Health officials say medicines are much more effective than they used to be, and yet not everyone who needs them are taking them. Federal funds will pay for free treatment for patients who qualify. “[We’re working to] expand the services to people who have HIV who either haven’t entered medical care or who were in medical care at one point and then dropped out of care,” said Susan Jones of the Alaska Department of Health. Pregnant women who are HIV-positive can also qualify for free medication. For more information you can call the state health department at 269-8057. |
