The Alaska Legislature isn’t in session right now but lawmakers are still on the go.

In fact, there are at least twelve who will travel this summer on special trips at a cost of thousands of dollars to the state.

State Sen. Lesil McGuire and Rep. Bob Lynn are getting set for a big trip at state expense. Both are going to Greece to attend the Special Olympic Summer Games. McGuire is on the organization’s board of directors but the state is paying for her trip—almost $2,000 for her plane ticket alone.

House Speaker Mike Chenault approved the funding for Rep. Lynn to go to Greece. He says it’s important that Alaska be represented at the games by state officials in order to show support for the three Alaskan athletes who are competing.

Another big trip planned for this summer is to Norway—at least ten lawmakers have signed up for that. The trip is to learn how other Arctic nations handle common issues.
The cost is over $4,000 per lawmaker, paid for by the state.
