UPDATE Wednesday, 10:10 a.m. - A second suspect was arrested Tuesday by Anchorage police in the case of the stabbing death of 56-year-old Thomas Atkinson Jr., who died Tuesday. Detectives believe 23-year-old Nicholas Moore was responsible for the assault and stabbing as well as 21-year-old Richard Smith. Moore has been arrested and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.

PREVIOUSLY - Thomas Atkinson Jr., the victim of a Sunday morning stabbing, died unexpectedly Tuesday at an Anchorage hospital.

Atkinson, 56, was stabbed several times in the back and later taken to a hospital where medical personnel dealt with his wounds surgically.

Police suspect 21-year-old Richard Smith to be at fault for the incident. The two were drinking together at Atkinson’s home off North Flower Street when the stabbing took place.

Medical staff originally believed Atkinson would survive his wounds, but early Tuesday Atkinson died.

The State of Alaska Medical Examiner's office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Smith turned himself in Sunday night to police, and is currently in custody while detectives investigate further.
