Southcentral Foundation Gathering Promotes Respect, Healthy Communities

By Kirsten Swann

For three decades, the Southcentral Foundation has helped foster healthy communities across Alaska.

Saturday, the organization marked the milestone with another celebration: the 15th Annual Southcentral Foundation Gathering.

Foundation leaders said the Gathering is modeled after traditional Native Alaskan assemblies.

“The state of Alaska is a family, and the Southcentral Foundation is part of that family,” said Foundation CEO Katherine Gottlieb. “I hope that when people walk away, they get that sense and feeling that we are all part of the same people.”

Delivering the opening remarks, Gov. Sean Parnell said the Gathering’s spirit of community and respect was essential in combating the wave of domestic violence sweeping the state.

“The measure of respect afforded the elders is a measure of respect that we ought to afford each other,” Parnell said.

While Alaska currently ranks first among states for domestic violence and violence against women, events like the Gathering and Parnell's "Choose Respect" campaign continue to fight against that ranking.

Kudos to Southcentral foundation for promoting excellent facilities for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well being. Their exercise facility at the hospital is staffed with respectful, knowedgable, well-trained staff that guide elders, and men and women of all ages to better physical health. Everyone there is well trained in excellent and respectful customer service for all races, native, black, white, somoan, whatever race you are, they esteem you in the highest regard. That says a lot.....
