Snow Removal Companies Are Running Out of Places to Dump Record Levels of SnowMore than 100 inches of snow so far this winterANCHORAGE - With more than 100 inches of snow this winter, snow removal companies are running out of places to put it. Dumptrucks from companies around Anchorage drop snow at various lots around town. Alaska Snow Removal is one of the state’s largest private snow removal companies, and managers said this year their crews dumped 7,800 loads and melted another 9,000. “When the snow dumps close... they're scattered through different areas of town,” said Alaska Snow Removal General Manager Tabb Thoms. “And as they fill up that means we have to truck it farther which takes longer.” American Landscaping owns a private dumpsite on 98th and C Street. Managers said the company shut down the site three weeks ago after taking in more than 7,000 truckloads. At the city’s largest lot, on 100th and C Street, a snow blower works to make more room for the loads of snow coming in, one right after the other. “We can stack it higher than you can with other pieces of equipment,” said Street Maintenance Superintendent Dan Southard.“ We're putting a lot more effort into it than normally but we're getting a lot more snow into the dumps.” Southard said about 50 trucks work every day and thus far have scooped up hundreds of thousands of truckloads. City staff said despite the high volume there should be enough room to make it through the spring, but the snow pile on C Street is so dense Southard said it may not completely melt this summer.

Here's an idea, make a ramp out to the ocean and dump it there.

Snow removal is a safety issue and our streets are not currently safe. There are many houses in many neighborhoods that cannot currently be reached by emergency vehicles due to the narrowing of streets. Time for the mayor to work with his staff and fix this. Anchorage is at risk of lawsuits - not to mention heartache - when a serious situation cannot be met with appropriate service and is made worse...

I have to say ..... while I appreciate the result of the cities snow removal, I wonder if at times they dont just have them out there to keep them working. Big money spent on something that will resolve itself.

After all these years, how is it this is still a dilema? We're living in Alaska, why aren't people able to figure this one out yet? With the huge amount of open, uninhabited areas available, how is it that no one has figured out how to remove it to this largely available space? Aren't there any intelligent people being paid to get this job done, don't we have a massive surplus of finances in this state to create jobs to possibly melt it and transfer it through waterways and canals gradually so as not to overwhelm the water ways all at once come breakup? The consistently occurring non results in so many areas of need in Alaska seem to indicate that we're being run by a handful of greedy, small minded and incompitent brats that never grew up!
