The American Lung Association’s annual tobacco report card has the State of Alaska faring well in some categories, and completely failing in others.

Here’s a look at how our state stacks up: We received an “A” for tobacco prevention and control spending. Lung Association advocates say that’s a top honor because most states in the nation fail in that category.

Alaska got a “C” on cigarette tax, an “F” for smoke-free air, and an “F” for cessation coverage. Advocates say they want to make sure everyone has a smoke-free workplace.

The Lung Association says right now there are 12 communities protected by smoke-free laws, including Anchorage, Fairbanks and Nome.

Advocates say they’re working with legislators and grassroots organizations to try to pass a statewide smoke-free bill.
