Shortage of Pilots in AnchorageProposed new rule raises requirements for first officersANCHORAGE - Next summer new Federal Aviation Administration [FAA] regulations on pilot training and experience are expected to come into effect. Earlier this year the FAA proposed to raise the qualification requirements for first officers, also known as co-pilots, who fly for U.S. passenger and cargo airlines. The regulation requires a first officer to hold an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate that requires a minimum 1,500 hours of pilot flight time. A pilot would also need an aircraft type rating. Currently, first officers are required to have a commercial pilot certificate, which takes 250 hours of flight time. The new requirement is consistent with a mandate by Congress in the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Extension Act of 2010. Instructors at flying schools, including at the University of Anchorage, say the additional training hours and the cost could have a dampening affect on the desirability of the career field. "It’s very expensive obviously to get a college education now double that, that's what it costs for the flight training,” said Rocky Capozzi, Director of the Aviation Technology Division at UAA. “Anything that is going to delay the day when you can start making the money to pay back those college loans are of concern.” Smaller air carriers in Alaska are worried they will lose pilots to the bigger airlines who will soon be headhunting. "Amongst the industry I think it's pretty well understood that it's going to be the regional carriers that feel the impact first," said Capozzi. "So if the big guys need more pilots where do they go? They go to the small guys and they take their most experienced pilots." |

400 hour pilots in the right seat are not safe. They have never had to make a flying decision in their career, their instructors made the decisions and then their captains. This rule is way overdue. $20k a year for an FO is pathetic, the market will adjust that to a salary deserving of the responsibility the position carries. The new pilots will find jobs, not pay for the extra hours like the prof quoted is saying.

I've seen these employers treat pilots like garbage for so long. I can remember trying to look for work here in Anchorage and throughout the state as a pilot and most of them wouldn't give me the time of day, with their noses up. Now the same couldn't be said from these companies that are loosing their pilots to bigger airlines, nice to finally see the tables are turning...but for how long?

Air charter operators are currently having difficulty finding pilots with the experience the need? They're kidding, right? What the air charter operators "should have said" was that they're having difficulty finding pilots with the experience they need AT THE PATHETICALLY LOW SALARIES THEY ARE OFFERING. Do you think an engineering firm would have trouble finding experienced engineers if they only paid $20,000 or $30,000 per year? How about an accounting firm? Wanted: experienced, college educated accountants. Salary $22,000 per year. Apply at.......and there would be no need to read any further. The problem that charter airlines and regional airlines face is that they are outright spoiled. For the past 3 or 4 decades, there has literally been a huge oversupply of pilots. These employers could pay extremely low salaries, treat their pilots poorly, and still find all the experienced applicants they needed. The gold at the end of the rainbow for these regional and charter airline pilots
