The national push for oil development in the Arctic is also moving forward on the local level.

The oil giant Shell Alaska submitted plans recently to drill exploratory wells after four years of setbacks.

At the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce’s weekly Make It Monday luncheon, Shell vice president Pete Slaiby said a lot depends on the actions of President Obama’s administration. Slaiby said issues like air permits and incidental harassment authorizations are parts of the process still need to be dealt with.

Despite support from companies like Shell, oil development in the Arctic still faces opposition. Some environmental groups, like the Center for Biological Diversity, said safe drilling in the Arctic cannot be guaranteed.
