Cars finally moving across Lowell Point Bridge

SEWARD - On Thursday night getting the Lowell Point Bridge cleared seemed like an impossible challenge.

“The earth is thundering, the water pressure can't be stopped. It's just dedication and hard work. They have years of experience. When you see crews literally working under the bridge or in the bay to move this it leaves people speechless,” said Seward City Manager Jim Hunt.

As loaders worked through the night it didn’t seem like the weather was ever going to let up. But what a difference a day makes. Friday morning the clouds parted and the sun rose over the mountains.

Cars were let through during limited hours and people stuck at Lowell Point could finally get moving.

“We were trapped for three days. We went in right before the storm happened and we got stuck. We didn't know whether we'd make it out or not,” said Michael Gutierrez who was on his honeymoon with his wife.

“We're just coming down to see what the status of everything is and see how the workers are doing. Everyone's been working really hard to get the bridge back open,” said Alan Heavirland.

Many took a break from all the rain to take in the power of Mother Nature, climbing high on to piles of rocks to get a better look at the waterfall.

Lowell Point Road was only open for four hours on Friday but, if the rain holds off, the city manager expects it will be open for a longer period of time throughout the weekend.
