ANCHORAGE - A road project that will affect drivers for years to come has kicked off on the Seward Highway.

Phase one involves widening a stretch of the road from four lanes to six, between Tudor and Dowling.

Crews started their work Wednesday by closing a section of Homer Road – the southbound frontage road that runs along the highway. They are clearing trees and pulling down the old guardrails for the widening project.

Part of the project involves extending the Campbell Creek bike trail under the highway, so for the first time the trail will connect. A wide, safe path is planned so that people can safely walk or bike beneath the highway.

In order to do the trail work crews will need to replace the existing four bridges that span the creek and raise the new ones up about eight feet. That part of the project will be the last to be completed sometime in 2014.

That’s also the date when the highway work should be completed up to Dowling road, but there’s
more to come. Phase two will add lanes on the highway up to Dimond. Phase three will widen
the highway to DeArmoun Road.
