Seward Highway Closes Due to AvalancheAvalanche risk reduction work will continue through FridayThe Seward Highway reopened Thursday afternoon after a large avalanche, the cleaning up took up much of the day. The Alaska Department of Transportation said the highway is now open in both directions at Milepost 37, at the Y-intersection with the Sterling Highway. The slide – which occurred at 7 a.m. Thursday – was estimated at three to ten feet deep and 100 feet wide. Further avalanche risk reduction work is expected to continue through Friday. Drivers are advised to expect delays of 20 to 40 minutes in active pass areas. Highway updates can be found by dialing 511 on your telephone.
