Woman in Serious Condition After Being Hit By Falling Ice

ANCHORAGE - A woman is in critical condition at a local hospital, 32-year-old Amanda Lawton, according to Anchorage dispatch.

Lawton, who is believed to be a firefighter, was headed north in her red pickup truck when she was struck by an avalanche near Beluga Point early Friday evening.

Anchorage police said she was pinned in her vehicle around 4:30 p.m. The Seward Highway has reopened, but the Department of Transportation has a person standing by prepared for the next ice fall.

According to APD, that avalanche was the second minor slide of the day.

Mike- Me and my husband were on that hwy on Sunday and took pictures of that Ice and we saw a couple of people moving that ice- if that was you? we want to thank you for doing that and you calling it in and nothing being done about it is just unbelievable-If anyone needs pictures let us know

I called APD on Sunday and told them about ice boulders that had fallen off the cliff right next to the highway and had personally moved the ice out of the road by hand. I told them they need to go blast that spot immediately for the safety of any one who travels that highway. Now we have an innocent women in critical condition. What do you have to say for yourself now APD and highway safety patrol? You are the responsible parties for this unnecessary tragedy.
