ANCHORAGE - Senator Lesil McGuire got engaged on Valentine’s Day, but the way she announced it has inspired a bit of a post-Valentine’s Day massacre.
McGuire send out the notice of her pending marriage to Anchorage lawyer Jason Skala on her State Senate stationery, with the email being distributed by a senate aide.
The use of official letterhead inspired derogatory phone calls to the Casey Reynolds Show on KFQD, and online under the story in the Anchorage Daily News.
But a cheerful McGuire said today there are legitimate reasons for using her office that way.
“It is a matter of laws, and he will be a public figure subject to everything,” McGuire said. “And in fact, he's already now, as a result of being my fiancé, subject to them. So all the appearance of impropriety statutes and all of the conflict of interest statutes and things will be out there. And so I think it's good to have as many people know about it in the public."
This will be McGuire’s third marriage. Her second husband, former Representative Tom Anderson, was released from federal prison last year after serving a sentence for political corruption.
