Sen. Begich Talks About Afghanistan TripPresents soldiers with awardsAlaska’s junior Senator Mark Begich is speaking about his two-day trip to Afghanistan. Senator Begich visited over the weekend, presenting four soldiers from the First Stryker Brigade combat team with awards for combat action and dedication to duty. Begich says another focus of the trip was to speak with senior Afghanistani military personnel, who told him progress on training troops is bing made, and they are getting more Afghans to join their country’s security forces. "Afghani's are getting fed up with the Taliban; they are tired of seeing the war at the level it's been at and because the Afghan Security Forces are taking more lead, what's happening is in one case [they] might say that was just some Americans who are injured but now they are seeing more of their people from their communities, from their tribes," Senator Begich said. According to Senator Begich’s office, there are currently 9,000 Alaska-based troops serving in Afghanistan.
