Second Superintendent Candidate to Make the RoundsSteve Atwater to meet with educators, studentsOne of the candidates for Anchorage superintendent is visiting teachers and students in the city over the next few days. Steve Atwater is the current superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, with more than 20 years of experience with the education system in rural Alaska. Atwater has worked as a teacher in the Lower Yukon and as superintendent of the Lake and Peninsula School District. He says he'd like to work harder to help students who don't speak English as a first language and bring more technology into Anchorage schools. "I think technology is not as efficient as it could be in the school district," Atwater said. "I think it's sporadic and disjointed; I think we can streamline the technology side of things - I view that as an area we can save money." The other finalist for the job is Jim Browder, a former superintendent of Lee County School District in Fort Myers, Florida. He has already visited Anchorage. Current superintendent Carol Comeau will retire on June 30 this year. |
