The state Division of Public Health says the seasonal respiratory virus is spreading in the southwest of the state, with 19 cases reported during the first week of January.

Health officials say it’s a common virus that affects many children, but for infants under two years old and for kids with preexisting health issues, the symptoms can become very serious.

This includes problems breathing and a high temperature.

Health officials say kids who are high risk need to be careful when out in community settings, avoid direct contact with those who are sick, and pay special attention to washing hands.
