Schaeffer Cox Juror Arrested on Weapons Charge at Alaska Border
Mary Morgan is at least the fifth person associated with Cox to be arrested in recent months.
FAIRBANKS — A Kenai militia activist and defender of Schaeffer Cox is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm for allegedly carrying a handgun last week at the Alaska Highway border crossing into Canada.
Mary Morgan, 53, declared she had a firearm to a Canadian Border Patrol officer Thursday. A search revealed a .32-caliber Beretta, according to a charging document against her. Morgan is not allowed to carry a handgun because she was convicted of interfering with a child custody agreement in 2001. She finished her probation for that offense in 2003.
An online forum participant by the same name as Morgan has written at length about the recent court case against Cox in the online forums of the Alaska Citizens Militia. In one February post about a Schaeffer Cox relief fund, she described driving to Fairbanks for a 17-juror trial Cox created for himself after telling a state judge he was not subject to state authority. The forum participant Morgan has also posted messages from Cox’s wife to the militia forum community.
Kenai Peninsula resident Norm Olson, who commands the militia, said he has not met Morgan in person, but is under the impression that the online Morgan is the same as the Morgan who was arrested last week. He has also posted about Morgan’s arrest online. Olson said he is puzzled by last week’s arrest because it appears Morgan wanted to be taken into federal custody.
“If you want to be arrested by the federals, why not go to the border with a firearm?” he said.
Morgan is at least the fifth person associated with Cox to be arrested in recent months. This summer, four people who served on the jury Cox created for himself were arrested in Washington on tax fraud charges, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
The charging document against Morgan does not connect her to weapons charges faced by Cox.
Morgan is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm in both state and federal court. She has a bail hearing in state court scheduled Friday.
