Russian Roulette Reason for Shooting, Accused Fairbanks Man Says

FAIRBANKS — Escaping a game of Russian roulette was the motive a Fairbanks man gave for why he shot two men in an apartment Saturday afternoon, according to a criminal complaint.

The defendant, Christian Andrew Williams of Fairbanks, is charged with two counts of first-degree felony assault.

Police responding to the report of gunshot at 4:09 p.m. said Williams was found hiding in the woods behind the apartment building.

Williams told Fairbanks police one of the men he shot put a gun on the kitchen table and wanted him to play Russian roulette. “Williams did not want to play Russian Roulette so he picked up the gun and shot both [the victims],” police wrote in the complaint.

Injured in the assault were Devante R. Woods, 19, and Olajahwon R. Quint, 18. Woods was shot in the abdomen and Quint was shot in the arm. The criminal complaint described Woods’ prognosis as “very poor,” but said Quint was expected to recover. A nurse at the intensive care unit said he could not say whether Woods was still in the unit Monday evening.

The type of weapon used in the shooting was not immediately clear, according to the criminal complaint. Williams told police he threw the gun in the woods, but it had not been recovered at the time the complaint was written. Police reported finding a .40 caliber casing inside the apartment and two magazines, and boxes of 9 millimeter ammunition with blood on them in a Dumpster down the alleyway from the apartment.

Quint told police he did not know who shot him and said an “unknown shooter shot several random shots through their deck door, which was open,” according to the complaint.

In a telephone interview, Detective Peyton Merideth described Williams as an acquaintance of the victims.

Woods, the man shot in the abdomen, was facing his own legal troubles at the time of the shooting. He was indicted Thursday on a charge of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor for allegedly sexually penetrating a victim who was between the ages of 13 and 15 on Feb. 24.

There was no indication the shooting was related to this pending sexual abuse charge, Merideth said, and alcohol is not believed to be a major factor in the assault. Williams had been drinking but was not heavily intoxicated, he said.
