Repairs Will Close Coastal Trail this Summer

Repaving 11 miles of trail means partial closures through mid-October

ANCHORAGE – One of Anchorage’s favorite places to play will be shutting down this summer as crews work to repave the entire Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Seven miles of trail will be getting a pavement makeover starting in May. Bridges along the route will also be resurfaced.

Parts of the trail will be closed while construction is underway. Park planners said the work will be done in three phases, so users can still have access to parts of the trail throughout the summer. Detours will be set up for sections that are closed. The project is expected to be completed by October.

Workers said the construction schedule has been designed around three major events. The Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon, The Alaska Run For Women, and The Big Wild Life will all go on as planned, although smaller races may need to be re-routed.

The first phase of construction will start at mile 5.1, at a large blue bridge south of Point Woronzof, and going all the way to Earthquake Park. That phase is expected to begin in May and be completed by June 20.

Phase two will close a section of trail from Westchester Lagoon to Elderberry Park on Second Avenue. That phase is expected to run from June 24 until August 15.

The final phase will be from Earthquake Park to Westchester Lagoon, which should start around August 19 and run through mid-October.

The city's parks department encourages people to look at its website for the trail rehab program; it will be updated throughout the summer with schedules and closures.

It takes that long to paved a bike trail? Must be union labor to do a job that may take one month and a half and do it in five!!
