Old Redistricting Plan to be Used for Upcoming Election

ALASKA - The Alaska Supreme Court says the state's redistricting board can use its old plan for the upcoming elections.

The court had asked for and gotten a new plan from the board earlier this month, but agrees that it's too late to use it.

The plan submitted in April, and objected to by a variety of governments and voters, will now be used for the November elections this year.

Problems with areas in Southeast Alaska and Fairbanks will be addressed later with an amended plan to be used after this year.

Part of the delay in implementing the latest plan is it still needs approval from the Justice Department - a process that can take up to 60 days.

The filing deadline for candidates is June 1.
