Police Investigate Overnight Road Death

ANCHORAGE -  The death of a woman found lying in an Eastside road early Sunday morning is no longer considered suspicious.

Dispatchers said the report first came in at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, when callers described an unresponsive person lying in the intersection at 9th Avenue and Bragaw Street. The woman was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, and police said they initially began investigating the death as a possible homicide.

According to police, the 29-year-old woman, now identified as Diana Knapp, was in a van with three other passengers when she intentionally jumped out of the van while it was moving. She received head and neck injuries and died at the scene. Witnesses told APD drugs were involved in the incident.

Diana had an impulse control problem and she did not think past the moment of wanting out of that van. She did not think about ending her life! It was a very, very unfortunate accident.

I knew this woman. I went to school with her, and I know and like her family. All I can say is that she was very troubled, and quite frankly, no one I have talked to is very surprised that this is the way she chose to end her life. But her case is not one of the local police not helping the Native population, it is more about a failure of our community health and judicial systems not being willing to offer adequate help for the victims of, and families of people with mental health conditions. And she was not just some alcoholic drug abuser who threw themselves out of a moving vehicle, she was a woman who had an entire community who loved and supported her, and we are all deeply saddened by how her story has ended

I am not racial,We all know what alcohol and drugs do to people.Sure the system needs to look into the corruption, especially within the OCS and start charging the social services who are destroying families and ruining innocent children's lives. And the matter is not race based for the fraudulent billing and adoption incentives.

AK Native Comment is ridiculous! They do care, I have seen them many times helping intoxicated natives, whites and blacks. No one forces people to drink and behave like that. If I were a cop I would be tired of picking the drunks up and getting them to safety, especially when help is offered and expected. Our taxes pay for rehab, police and community pick-up. Help yourself first!! Maybe thank officers who put themselves in harms way to keep the peace when others get out of control.

You all sound so stupid. There are many good Police and troopers here in Alaska. And to say they dont care about ALASKAN NATIVES are you kidding me????? As Iam Alaskan Native myself. Theya are always takeing care of the ones who let drugs and alcohol over take their lives. And cop rape victem. That cop has been put behind bars. You all are just showing how ignorant you all are. I would like to see you all go out there and save some lifes, clean up the streets, oh yeah it is not your job as it is to sit on a computer and bash the individuals who do their jobs. STOP BASHING AND TAKE PART OF OUR COMMUNITY AND HELP ONE AN OTHER. This poor lady was 29 yrs old. How do you know she was not trying to excape from some one who was trying to hurt her. A bunch of nobodys with toooo much time on their hands.

Lying!!! The woman was lying in the road not laying. Is it no wonder our children don't get their grammar straight when our newspapers are so horrible at it.

Yoiu say we got dirty cops up here, and I do not doubt there area few, but for the most part, knowing those I do, they do want to help those who aren't merely out to get back in jail. Drugs are the problem...not the cops. If you want change, stop drinking and druggin, you can make that happen and others around you may follow. Myself, 12 years clean and sober...what a great life I have now. Then, back when I was wasting time, I simply wasted time. Now I am alive and breathing and that lonely feeling that haunted me when I drank and drugged, it's just the little girl within me. I am mature and I make the decisions that effect my life! It's time for you ALL to make the right choice to better your life...before you don't have a choice.
