By KTVA CBS 11 News

ANCHORAGE - Police say Anchorage Community Action Policing (CAP) Officer Mitch Kerr interrupted a sexual assault in Town Square Park on Tuesday shortly before 6 p.m.

The 22-year-old victim had been smoking "Spice," the synthetic marijuana banned by the state legislature in 2011, with 42-year-old Earl Vrooman Jr., witnesses told police, who say the two didn't know one another prior to the incident.

When Officer Kerr came across the assault, the victim was unconscious. Vrooman was arrested, and the still-unconscious victim was taken to a local hospital.

Vrooman is charged with second-degree sexual assault, and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.
