Moose Federation Expands to Mat-Su Valley

AMF helps out Mat-Su by picking up dead moose from collisions

The Alaska Moose Federation (AMF) picked up its first moose Friday Morning in Palmer.

AMF is a moose salvage program and now includes the Mat-Su Borough. The purpose of the program is to quickly remove dead moose from traffic collision scenes.

The Anchorage program saves APD roughly 2.5 hours.

After picking up the expired moose they are delivered to local charities to help feed the hungry.

“Thanks to a grant from the Alaska State Legislature, support from state agencies, and especially the Parnell Administration, the AMF has now begun moose salvage collection on the Mat-Su roads,” said Executive Director for AMF Gary Olson, in a press release January 27. “By providing a 24/7 rapid response service, the Alaska Moose Federation can help keep our roads and highways safer.”

In the Mat-Su Borough an average of 270 moose/vehicle collisions happen a year. In every collision an average of $35,000 worth of damage happens, according to AMF.

This year the Mat-Su Borough has already reached 270 moose/automobile accidents – this could cause an estimated $15 million dollars worth of damage this year.

The new Mat-Su group consists of 5 trucks – specially equipped – operated by volunteers and covers the area in Talkeetna to Sutton to the Palmer Hay Flats to Point MacKenzie.

Those Moose belong to the hungry residents of the Mat-Su Valley, who are on a list to respond to any road-kill Moose within 30 minutes. We do not have to come from Anchorage to respond, so I think that the Anchorage Moose Federation needs to focus on dealing only with Moose road-kills on the south side of the Knik river! We also do it just as fast and just as effectively without fancy trucks, willing to quickly remove and sign of that road-kill in extreme sub zero temperatures.

Your report lacks some important details. For example, where does the meat go? How does this impact the OTHER volunteers that have signed up in the valley to pick up road kill moose? There are already volunteer road kill pickup teams in the valley - Do they get less moose for their families now? Alaska Moose Federation is NOT a salvage operation, at least not exclusively. What ELSE do they do? A little more research please Ms. Edge.

I believe you meant to say the Alaska Moose Federation instead of the Anchorage MF. Plus, those moose belong to anyone in the State of Alaska that is on the Road Kill program. Just because it is hit in your area doesn't give you ownership in it.

Who is this Federation? A federation of what entities? Where can we get information about this "Federation"?

Actually they just help out. I'm on the road kill list, and the moose federation picked up the moose and dropped it off at my house, saving me a lot of work.
