ANCHORAGE - A fatal accident happened Sunday night at 9:48 p.m. next to the west end of the Sears Mall on Denali Street.

When Anchorage police arrived, they found a pedestrian, 51-year-old Victor Andrews, had been killed after being struck by a vehicle. Officers performed CPR on Andrews but medics declared him deceased on their arrival.

Witnesses told APD a Chevrolet Malibu was driving northbound on Denali Street when its driver, Hicham Benbella, saw Andrews lying in the road near a bus stop in the far right lane. Benbella swerved, barely missing Andrews, but the Chevrolet Trailblazer following the Malibu hit Andrews and dragged him a short distance. The Trailblazer’s driver, Kalapu Monogiamanu, told police when he saw Benbella swerve, he assumed it was a bag in the road and hit it with his vehicle. He says it was only after the collision he realized it wasn’t a bag he’d hit.

APD’s Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate.

Either the man had passed out due to a medical condition (ie. heart attack, diabetes, stroke, new medicine) OR he was intoxicated and just passed out wherever. I'm inclined to think it was the latter, he was drunk and just passed out on the road. Killed by the bottle really, not by the man driving the car. How sad for everyone.

I would think that Kalapu would have done the same thing the other driver did. Avoided the unexpected, so why was this guy not taking precautions and hes saying he thought it was a bag???? When did he think this???
