Parnell Administration Examines Low King Salmon Run
Governor asks for disaster declaration
By KTVA CBS 11 News

ANCHORAGE - The Parnell administration is promising a comprehensive scientific analysis of the weak king salmon returns throughout Alaska.

Governor Sean Parnell and Fish and Game Commissioner Cora Campbell held a news conference Friday to announce the effort to bring together the top fisheries biologists in the state.

They declined to speculate on the causes for the low number of Chinooks, or what steps might be recommended by the scientists.

"…And even if the result is at the end of the day is that it's primarily driven by environmental factors that are beyond the direct control of state managers, that information is still useful to us because it improves our ability to forecast runs, it improves our in-season management ability and it improves the ability of Alaskans who rely on this resource to know what's coming,” said Campbell.

Parnell already has asked the U.S. Commerce Secretary for a federal disaster declaration and says he hopes for additional research funding as well.
