On Sept. 11 ten years ago, thousands of ordinary Americans became heroes.

Sunday morning in Palmer, hundreds of Alaskans remembered those fallen in an extraordinary way.

"Some people say we don't have heroes today," said Jim Uhl, a first-time participant in the annual Freedom Flag Run memorial drive. "We just don't look hard enough."

The five-mile-long procession of cars, trucks and motorcycles has driven down the Palmer-Wasilla Highway every year since 2002, and drivers said it's a way to honor America's servicemen and women, both the fallen and those still serving.

"This is a fun thing," said Lyle Davis, a two-year winner of the event's "Most Patriotic" award. "We get all of our car clubs together and we're able to put on a really good show of support."

Some spent weeks decorating their cars in red, white and blue, while others sported a single flag. The common denominator? a strong sense of patriotism.

"We need to honor all of our service people, not just in the military," Uhl said. "Fire, police, rescue, all of them: they're all heroes."
