ANCHORAGE - A man is dead after an officer involved shooting Tuesday morning. The suspect is identified as 25-year old Carl Richard Bowie III. Authorities said he was on parole after a robbery conviction and wasn't complying with the conditions set, but couldn't say what those conditions are because they're confidential.

Officers said they received a call around 10 a.m. Tuesday that a man was looking into cars at the Dimond Center parking lot. Bowie fled the scene in a truck police say was reported stolen at 8:15 that morning.

Police deployed spike strips around 88th and Lake Otis to stop Bowie, but the tactic didn't work. At that point the pursuit was called off because it was too dangerous.

"We're always walking that fine line. How far do you want to go to make an arrest, how much risk to do expect the public to have to endure, how do you balance the two? That's what street supervisors do is constantly weigh the danger of letting the suspect go, as opposed to the danger of the public if you continue the effort to capture him," said Police Chief Mark Mew.

Officers caught up with Bowie at a subdivision on 53rd and Windflower, where they used their patrol cars to pin him in. That's when they say Bowie started crashing into the cars with the stolen truck.

"The implications suggest the officers were being rammed and were in danger of being killed or injured themselves, so they have to stop the car to prevent themselves from being injured or the suspect injuring someone else."

Two officers opened fire after Bowie hit two patrol cars. Bowie lost control, crashed the truck, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman in the car was not injured and was taken to the police station for questioning.

APD will release the names of the officers who fired their guns in three days.

Good ending! Hate to think this way, but honestly, it saves us all the time and money of a trial/room and board in a jail cell. You're being stupid, the cops need to shoot you, end of story. Maybe if it happens enough, the stupidty will lessen, (but I doubt it).

He looks just like the guy that stole my truck a few months ago. Tattooed up and all gangstah! That's cool right? Is this the future of Anchorage? Is this what my kids are going to be exposed to when they become teenagers? No thanks! I'm outta this craphole of a town!

Sound like the time spent at the police firing range was well spent.

We agree with the previous comment -- this is a craphole of a town. We're both from Alaska, but we've had enough of this city and this state, so we're packing up and leaving as soon as the snow melts. If it was just one problem, it'd be no big deal. But when you add it all up, this is one of the worst places to live in the world. We have a stupid mayor who can't even manage to figure out how to plow the sidewalks but has money to blow on other dumb events (and bans sitting on sidewalks as if that will cure the homeless problem), we have police that shoot to kill unarmed citizens, we have the highest suicide rate due to absolute neglect and racism toward Alaska Natives (it's true, effing wake up Alaskans), we economically force all of our "ethnic" groups into Fairview, Mountain View, etc. and don't care about the poverty that breeds the crime and it's impossible to have a healthy lifestyle because it's too expensive to even cover basic living needs. Hell yeah, we're leaving this dive!

I cannot believe that someone actually compared this to Hitler and suggested that the police are simply executing people. The guy was using his stolen vehicle to ram into the police. I wonder what the person that made that simple minded post would say if he/she were in the officers shoes... too many folks wanting to simply bash the police when they are out there doing their jobs keeping criminals like this 'thug' off the streets, and protecting law abiding citizens... its a shame hearing that sort of disrespectful and ignorant comments.

the hitler comment was directed to the person who said good ending when someone is brazen enough to think its better to execute someone that is pretty sick

I find it very bold that certain people are careless enough to leave comments like "good shooting" and "tax money well spent". This was my brother who was killed. We grew up together. I love him very much. If it was someone's opinion that he deserved it or that it was a good thing I would have hoped they wouldn't show something like that where his loved ones could see it. And especially considering these people weren't there to see exactly what happened and never knew this person, considering they show on the news his body laying on the concrete for us and his daughter to see, they give his name so his young daughter found out one day by seeing this on the news. That hurts my heart. I will miss him for the rest of my life, and so will my mother, my father, his young children, and all his family. He was greatly loved.
