An Anchorage police officer was seriously injured when a vehicle driving outbound in the inbound lanes of the Glenn Highway smashed into his patrol car early this morning.

Dispatch first recieved reports of a silver sedan driving the wrong way at 1:49 a.m. when multiple drivers called to report the vehicle.

One driver said they had been run off the road, and another said the sedan was speeding directly into oncoming traffic.

Officer Randy Hughes had been driving inbound on the highway near Highland Road when, minutes later, the rented 2011 Chrysler slammed into his patrol car.

Police said the sedan immediately burst into flames, and Hughes was pinned inside his patrol car with major injuries to his foot and pelvis.

Officer Daniel Sturkie had responded to the scene, and was able to break a window in the sedan and pull the driver, 49-year-old Gregory Fulling, to safety.

Hughes was also pulled from his vehicle, and both drivers were taken to a local hospital.

Originally from Marysville, Wash., Fulling is still being treated for his injuries. Police said they're unsure if alcohol was a factor in the crash, and the investigation is ongoing.

Officier Hughes remains hospitalized at Alaska Regional Hospital with mulitple factures, cuts and scrapes. He will require additional treatment and rehabilitation for his injuries.

The driver, Fulling, suffered skull fractures in the crash and remains in the hospital but police say his injuries are nonlife threatening.

For the time being, Fulling is not facing any charges.

The highway was closed for several hours after the crash, but was reopened at 6:30 a.m

Best thoughts are with the police man injured in this senseless act of violence (yes, it is an act of violence). What ever the other drivers motive was, his victim could have been anyone driving in his path.

Towguy- how do you know the cop was attempting to stop the other car? Was he even aware of that oncoming vehicle? Looks to me like he got hit close to head-on; smart cops have better ways to stop vehicles.

anchorage pigs are goverment thugs, and nothing more! One things that is funny is-- the police retirement funds are being stolen and looted just like everyone else's in this country, but they protect the thieves! Let's see how that works out for you idiots.

Since you find our police officers so offensive, why don't you MOVE? No one would miss you I am sure. You talk like a little kid that didn't get his way about something. You must have a criminal record for drugs, theft, speeding, or something bigger.People liek you that WHINE, WHINE, WHINE have something to HIDE>Our officers are hired to protect citizens from low life like you, so if you don;t like our police force, MOVE to China, the Middle East or Russia,so you can get a real taste of what you call police corruption.

I think most alaskans distrust the police and the system in general. And that would be hard to dispute. One angry cop leaving multiple posts will not change that, even if he keeps posting under multiple names. Sorry, the truth is the truth.
