Occupy Anchorage Protesters Fill Town SquareAs protesters go into their fourth straight day of demonstrations in Anchorage's Town Square Park, they said they're still figuring out exactly what they're fighting.Related Content
The Occupy Wall Street movement has finally come to Anchorage, where Brian MacMillan said it started with a single Facebook page.
"All I did was press click, create a page—that’s it,” said MacMillan, one of the forces behind the protest that has dominated Anchorage’s Town Square Park for the past several days. As Occupy Anchorage protesters went into their fourth day of demonstrations Saturday, they show no signs of slowing down. But unlike other protests, Occupy demonstrators have many different views on what they’re fighting against. Some said it’s about corporate greed, others said it’s about equality. "It's taking the money out of politics, and that follows down and trickles down to the greed on Wall Street,” MacMillan said. “It’s the erosion of the middle class." He said the movement in downtown Anchorage was born of the frustrations of Alaskans from all walks of life, and Saturday was a chance to find out exactly what that meant. "Today is a day of formulation, today is the day we try to coalesce,” MacMillan said. “We're a group of strangers who are just starting to work together." Word of the movement is spreading through both social and mainstream media, but MacMillan said he never expected it to grow like it has. While they’re still deciding where to go next, he said it’s not going away. |

It is becoming increasingly annoying to go downtown and view the collection of garbage in Town Square Park. Everyone should enjoy their freedom to protest, communicate their message, etc. Its another thing to drive or walk near the PAC and have signs waved in your face as you go by. Your not winning yourselves any friends by this behavior. Doesn't the city have any criteria for using our parks. Message to businesses: This is just one more reason to stay away from downtown and the area near the PAC in particular.

I wish these protesters would have a clue, and get Mayor Sullivan to take the fluoride out of their drinking water, it is affecting their brains. The free communities of Fairbanks and Juneau already removed this corporate toxin from their drinking water citing neurotoxic effects.

By way of correction, and apology to KTVA and the news reporter, I mistakenly believed the blurb above was all that was said. This wrong idea was heightened by the misguided, mean spirited tone of most of the comments here. However, I stand corrected because there is a KTVA video that goes with this, and it does a very good job of reporting the event. Thanks, KTVA!

Create Prudhoe Bay jobs for Alaskans by limiting work rotations to one week on/ one week off. You will see non-residents flee and Prudhoe money stay in Alaska. There is no constitutional issue by doing it this way. If you want to work here then live here.

Just read ADN now on this same story..however yesterday they had a very short sentence or two on this same story. Interesting to note that in their today story they did have several comments from people in the protest that gave crediable accounts of why they were there. This comment is not to praise ADN or to find fault with the KTVA story only ..to show that some protest people there knew exactly why they were there .

Nation of Change.org. gives 25 reasons why people are protesting. Alaskan reporters should be ashamed of themselves for being so lazy they don't do their research. Or maybe they think that price gouging, land stealing, environmental irresponsibility, outsourcing, using middle class tax payers to bail out the banks, are all normal characteristics of a healthy society. Get an education, folk. Become informed. Don't let media enhanced corporate greed control you.

It is good to be gathering in protest. It's important for the masses to be heard and gathering together with a strong presence is critical. There is so much to speak out against that it may take some time for a specific list of demands to present itself. For starters, how about respect, fairness and equality for all the people, decent health care for all the people, and wages that keep pace with the cost of living. How about insuring that corporations' rights are not larger than the rights of all the people. It is no longer about republicans or democrats or tea party folks. It is about the masses of people who make up this country, who have been played by the politicians and economically raped by corporate power. We the people are protesting so that our collective voice is no longer drowned out by those with perceived and actual power.

This protest is not about anything specific. It's about 99% of americans compromising their pursuit of happiness while 1% further profits far beyond anyones' reasonable means. 99% of americans in one way or another could have higher qualities of life at the expense of 1%. This has NOTHING to do with politics except to say our politicians on both sides should have been looking out for the 99% this whole time.

why does it have to be about a single issue? the Declaration of Independence is a list of greviances (a long list) of conditions that we found intolerable. Not everyone agreed with all of the conditions or even the need to separate; so why do the Occupy Wallstreet protestes need a manifesto or ideology. We are the most unideological country in the world. Folks just find the present circumstances tolerable. Perhaps Linclon was right you "can't fool all of the people all of the time" Perhaps we are finally beginning to realize the Republicans and Dems have played us for chumps.

This movement stems from the fact that the only recipients of the huge bail-outs were huge financial institutions and huge corporations. Small businesses (99% of businesses in America) received nothing. The fat-cats got a fat hand-out while the poor and middle-class were left out in the cold. This is similar to the original sentiments of the Tea-bagger movement (minus the racism); before they were co-opted by the billionaire Koch brothers etc to help dismantle gov't. AKK You are insane. They set up the twin towers with explosives over a six month period. No one noticed all the walls ripped out and repaired every night. No camera's or security guards noticed the commotion.The janitors cleaned up the mess every night. They had the plane fly into the 85th floor....then ran upstairs to fix all the Det cord and Thermite explosive charges, that were severed by the Airplane hitting the tower. Then they ran back downstairs and set off the explosives in a thirty minute time span. The real tragedy...was the 900 degree Celsius Temperature that was generated by a plane full of jet fuel hitting the building. It stripped the buildings steel beams of their insulation on impact. Any protest person in any protest should be able to say what they are there for. Surely some in this Anchorage protest do know and would say. The protesters in general have the right ideas..unfortnately not all know how to tell the protest in a good sensible way..some do..They definitely need to be better organized with some very good leaders at the head of this has been said concerning all of this protest situation nationwide..as it is nationwide one has to know..and people of differing political feelings and status..this does show it is a worthwhile protest if organized in a good manner with very wise smart leaders.

Occupy Wall Street has posted a list of demands on their website.#1 demand is for Congress to pass HR 1489,ie.."The Return To Prudent Banking Act Of 2011" which is Glass-Steagall.HR 1489 was written by Rep.Marcy Kaptur and has 45 cosponsors.Why haven't Don Young,Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich added their names to the list of cosponsors? Why is Alaska so asleep?
