ANCHORAGE - If you like to garden, you know this is an exciting time of year.

Everything is coming up green and it won’t be long until flowers are everywhere. But something that can quickly spoil the fun is also lurking in your garden. Hungry bugs are appearing and they can strip a plant or tree almost overnight.

Michael Rasy, with the UAF Cooperative Extension Office in Anchorage, is an Integrated Pest Management Specialist. He said the time to act on bugs is now.

“Now is the time you should be out in your garden, you should be turning over leaves, you should be looking at what's going on, what's flying around, what may be chewing,” Rasy said. “Now is the time you definitely don’t want to leave plants unattended because if you do, you will come back and your plant will just be completely defoliated.”

Rasy said identifying the types of bugs in your garden or on your trees is the first step to nipping problems in the bud: Doing it early is the key.

He advises everyone to get on it now so you can enjoy your garden all summer long.
