Nome Man Attacked By Grizzly Bear in May Continues Recovery

A Nome man attacked by a grizzly bear back in May continues to recover at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, and is scheduled to return to Alaska within a week.

On May 15, Wes Perkins, 55, and two friends went on a routine bear hunt near Nome when a grizzly bear he was tracking attacked him, according to Alaska State Troopers.

“Doctors remind us everyday in their dealings with him that it's just such an unbelievable situation that he survived this,” said his sister, Julie Perkins Vincek.

Julie has been at his bedside as he recovers from seven reconstructive surgeries. His family said he is walking, coherent and the future looks bright.

“He is doing very well. His spirits are great, he is again very much sustained by all the thoughts and all the prayers from all over Alaska.”

She said although he is not able to speak, he is communicating through hand motions and writing.

Several days ago, Perkins was strong enough to celebrate his 55th birthday.

“If there was ever truly a celebration of life, that was that day,” his sister said. “Knowing that we have that opportunity to have him here for his birthday was very special meaning for the family. We don't take that for granted at all.”

Julie expects Perkins, along with her family, to return home sometime next week.
