ANCHORAGE - Alaska State Troopers now have three new tactical vehicles they hope will help keep officers safe during crisis situation.
The Lenco BearCats—which cost about $286,000 each—were paid for by leftover grant money from the past ten years.
Troopers say the heavy-duty trucks will be used in emergencies to protect officers and others.
“We have the ability to get in closer when we're trying to negotiate with people, when we have critical incidents that require evacuations of citizens from an area... if we have a shooter in a location and we need to get them out,” said Captain Randy Hahn.
Two BearCats will go to State Trooper Special Emergency Reaction Teams in Soldotna and Fairbanks. The other will be used by troopers in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley.
