ALASKA - The state has released a new report highlighting the number of HIV infections that have been reported across Alaska since the 1980s.

The state's Department of Epidemiology reports that since 1982 until December 31, 2011 there have been nearly 1,500 cases of HIV infections.

504 of those people have since died.

In 2011, the state received 61 new cases of HIV infections, 24 of which were diagnosed in Alaska, and eight that were part of an ongoing outbreak in the Fairbanks area.

Health officials say the outbreak in Fairbanks primarily involves men having sex with men.
