New Organization Pairs Service Dogs With ClientsWhile it took just one dog to change their family’s life, it took a promise to pay it forward to change dozens more.
For some people, everything happens for a reason.
Three days after Sgt. Jason Wideman said goodbye to the service dog that helped pull him out of the pit of post-traumatic stress disorder, his family is working to bring the same solution to other military men and women in the same situation. "We know there is no out, but there is help,” said Jason’s wife, Karla Wideman. “We found that with service dogs, and we just can't wait now for, you know, the next step." For the Widemans, the next step comes in the form of Midnight Sun Service Dogs. Four days ago, the family had said goodbye to Scotty, a service dog they had been training with through the group Alaska Assistance Dogs. After a disagreement over training requirements led AAD to reclaim the 2-year-old golden retriever, the Widemans are now looking for new puppies – not only for Jason, but for MSSD’s 15 military clients as well. "Now, he'll really be there with these men he's mentoring,” Karla said, describing the training and bonding process behind every service dog. “He’ll be there, training these puppies." April Merchant, one of the organization’s trainers and co-founders, said the group has an even bigger goal: breaking ground on a multi-purpose facility where military men and women could simultaneously work with PTSD service dogs while training puppies for other veterans. "It will be to house homeless veterans and to get them back into the work community,” Merchant said. “To get them the services that they need to become whole again." Meanwhile, Merchant and the Widemans continue to work with volunteers, veterans and breeders from around the state to provide an escape from the disorder effecting so many Alaska military men and women. While it took just one dog to change their family’s life, it took a promise to pay it forward to change dozens more. |

In agreement with didnotlisten. As of today no one at MSSD is a certified dog trainer let alone someone who can provide someone with a disability as complex as PTSD or autism advice on what is required to train a service dog. I was personally led down the path of misinformation by April, Jason, and Karla under MSSD and then by Jason and Karla under Far Above Midnite Service Dogs. Now I'm stuck with a dog whom I love very much but will never be a service dog. Not only that but I know don't trust any organization who might be able to help obtain a real service dog. By the way Jason didn't have to relinquish Scotty bc he was deployed he wasn't deployed he just thought he could do better. Then began presenting himself as an expert in training service dogs and mrs. Wiseman was even worse than he. Anyone looking for a "trained service dog" needs to do their research. If no one on the staff of the organization has creditials that include trainer from a reputable training facility b careful.

I wonder why KTVA does not do a fallow up on this story. Jason and his wife Karla left MSSD a few months later to start their own Service Dog Organization up in Fairbanks. After getting a whole bunch of dogs and money donated , they "ran" over night and left the people in the new group as well. I know for a fact, that some of the dogs donated to them have never attended any kind of Training so they got dumped (i would not be surprised if they even got sold) as family pets. So all they did with the help of another Army wife was, to betray people that wanted to help those in need. Some dogs that they had for Training are still in contract with MSSD but they do not get the Dogs back, that are not used for the purpose of being service dogs. Now i hope that Jason,Karla and the other Army couple (they are Pcs'ing soon ) don't start the same at their new Duty station but i guess it will happen because it is so easy to play with peoples emotions when it comes to helping our Heros.

I would love to know what credentials and experience the individuals at Midnight Sun Service Dogs have in dog training as April wasn't the President of Alaska Assistance Dogs for very long and the Vet couldn't even finish a years worth of dog training with Scotty? Also, I want to know if they really wanted to keep Scotty because he could help train the puppies for the Midnight Sun Service Dog Organization? There seems to be a great gap in information going to the public and very skewed media coverage against Alaska Assistance Dogs and for this irresponsible Vet and his new "service dog training organization."

Jason being part of Alaska Assistance Dogs board knew what the requirements were for obtaining a service dog. He chose to stop training and all communications with AAD. Where is his honor being a military officer for honoring agreements? It is sad that he did this to Scotty. If he truly was interested in obtaining a service dog he would have stuck with the program. All he wanted Scotty for was for breading his own service dog at Midnight Suns Service Dogs. Both he and April Merchant should be a ashamed of themselves for trying to pull a media stunt to gain recognition for a company that doesn't have credentials or a proven track record of training and placing service dogs. Who this is really going to hurt in the end is the military because now they can pull the service dog program because is problematic; all because of an Army Officer that didn't want to honor his agreement with AAD. When that happens remember to thank Jason Weidman!
