New Law Helps Protect the Elderly

Senior financial scams are a growing crime in Alaska

ANCHORAGE - A new law could help protect seniors from financial scams, a crime that is growing in Alaska.

Detectives say seniors tend to be more trusting, and unfortunately the people who take advantage of them most often are people that they know.

“They are being victimized by family members, or somebody that is close to them or someone who
is in their home for another reason,“ said APD’s Financial Crimes Unit Detective Tiffani Loughman.

Nationally, seniors are victimized by scammers they don’t know about half the time. These are people who approach them on the internet or by phone, often convincing the unwary senior to wire money to a fraudulent site. But in Alaska only about 30 percent of financial crimes against seniors happen in this way.

More often, says Detective Loughman, it is a relative or a caregiver in their home. And often the information they need to pull a scam is left out in plain sight.

“A lot of time people will write down their PIN numbers because they are having difficulty remembering them. Or write down their account numbers because they are having difficulty remembering them. Checkbooks can be left out and all that is accessible.”

Loughman says seniors need to guard their financial information from strangers and speak up if they believe a family member may be taking advantage of them. The new law may help. It expands the definition of what is considered abusive when it comes to seniors and also speeds up the time for those cases to be heard in court.

Fine they are going to protect the old, what about the gays? We need to be a protected class also, we get scammed to. We need a revote recount on the last election. Protect the gays too. The preparation H scammers get me every time. One Anchorage, two or three or four, maybe 5 or 6 or 7 Alaska, and 8 or 9 or 10 USA but I want my rights too. Did I metion I was gay, otherwise, well no one would know. And then this post would not have the impact. If this post gets deleted by the mods I will sue based on discrimination.

yeah I know of a case in Wasilla...the kid was a HE contractor and got sick, the mom was the POA and refused to pay the hospital bill, transferred all the properties to her, and got him on medicaid...he died and left some stuff to others, that got hidden as well...now if the matter goes to court? I know an elderly mom who will retire in jail...another case of a daughter and the parents, the mom dies and 3 days before that the daughter sets fire to her house, so it was rumored, but after the mom died, the daughter built a custom log home and drained the fathers account...but he didn't care, and had a house of his own...accused of elder fraud but not proven...another matter to take to court, would not be a good outcome...what is peoples problem? And I heard both cases are tied to Sarah Palin? How I don't know, unless they were "favor friends" those that do favors for her...but what did they do? who knows...who cares I said...they said it was HUGE? ok...whatever...
