New Crime Lab Readies for Opening$87 million makeoverIt was one of the state’s most controversial funding decisions, and now it is getting set to open its doors. Moving day into the state’s new crime lab is set for June 2. The legislature fought for years over the price tag of the new facility as well as the need. Now, $87 million later the building is almost set to open. The new lab will process crime scene evidence from across the state, catching up on crimes that have already occurred and storing evidence that could be used to solve crimes in the future. Workers imagine efficiencies that were impossible in the older cramped quarters, that are now just down the road. Currently the shooting range still doubles as a storage area for ammunition and the weapons library literally has guns hanging off of shelves. The new space is four times as big and state of the art. Workers are excited to move in June and expect to have the new lab fully functional some time in July.
