ANCHORAGE - More than two dozen Anchorage police officers could lose their jobs, depending upon how much money is cut from the city budget. The "bottom 30" met with Alaska State Troopers Wednesday to discuss job opportunities. Some officers moved to Alaska from different states to work for the Anchorage Police Department. One of them says he took a 30 percent pay cut to be part of the department. “It's always a possibility, but I prefer to stay with APD and in Anchorage,” said Officer Kyle Olson. “I know that's the biggest concern with the troopers, is I would be moving out of the community, and I want to stay in Anchorage, and with my wife's career as well, she's not going to be able to move around.” Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan said it’s not just the police department he is concerned about. He said the city has a $30 million gap in its budget and all departments will have to share in erasing the deficit. He said they have meetings almost daily to come up with solutions and said he would like the police union to consider making concessions as well. “There's things that could be done, like a one year wage freeze. If the city has a $30 million gap and a lot of it is caused by the rising cost of employees, maybe it would make sense of the employees to say, we'll stay even this year and help out our young officers and other employees based on seniority,” Sullivan said. The budget is expected to be presented to the assembly October 1. |

Not very nice to see a $8 million budget shortfall. It is a shame that one of their own cost the city that much for assaulting women. Guess APD should have been paying closer attention to their officers.

We complain about the way our Federal Government spends other peoples money without care and then we have juries that award huge amounts of money without any conscience of where it comes from. Worse part is they think someone else is paying but it ultimately comes out of their own pocket.

hey Danno...your an idiot o...hiring a veteran means the city does not have to pay up to 14,000 of the wages for the first year, and it's 12,000 the next year...for someone who claims to do the math I think he flunked the test...how did he get to mayor? $$$

You are making a big mistake in losing well trained and motivated police officers. These are the ones that are hard to find. Every time there's talk of budget cuts, its always the standard scare tactic to cut back on police, fire, and emergency services. Don't cut what you need, cut what you don't.
