ALASKA - The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation would like everyone to participate in National Drug Collection Day Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This event was established to protect the public through safe collection and disposal of prescription medication. This event is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Alaska participated in two collection days in 2010 and 2011, with numbers increasing each year.

"The fact that the amount of collected material continues to increase is a sign that more and more Alaskans are recognizing the danger in simply throwing medications away," said state Department of Environmental Conservation Health Director Kristin Ryan in a press release.

Proper medication disposal is the goal so that drugs are kept out of the environment. Drugs will be collected anonymously, with collection sites across the state.
