Offshore oil and gas drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas may be one step closer to reality.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, is accepting public comment on a proposed environmental impact statement for that reason.

The document examines the potential effect of offshore activity on marine mammals and steps NOAA could adopt to lessen those effects.

The administration will be accepting comments on the plan for the next 45 days.
