ANCHORAGE - After a month of letting their mustaches grow out, more than 20 men were now ready to cash it in Friday night, including KTVA’s own Corey Allen-Young, Sean Doogan and Brett Shepard. And it wasn’t because of the spring weather.

It's your typical fashion catwalk, but with mustaches.

Twenty-seven mustached and bright colored hair contestants braved the stage to show off the hair they've been growing for the last month to raise money for Covenant House, to help Alaska’s homeless teens.

“I think it's a great opportunity to help young adults and teens that may not have everything they need to succeed,” said mustache farmer Ryan Makinster.

Women also dyed their hair to help raise awareness. “The participants and the donors are a lot younger, and this is really an opportunity to engage that group and get them invested in their community, and invest in a generation that’s just a little bit younger than them but much more vulnerable."

For CBS 11's Brett Shepard, it brought the unexpected.

“One thing I thought it would help out with was the ladies, but this kind of mustache kind of scares them away,” Shepard said.

Regardless of what type of reaction these mustached men and colorful haired women got, they certainly cashed in thousands of dollars for a good cause.

The winners of Friday’s ‘stache competition were Lee Post for men's overall, and Michael Fredericks for women.

Covenant House expects to raise its $10,000 dollar goal at tonight's event.
