Key Points

Matt Felling: This week the government issued the first permit since the Deepwater Horizon. But they did so with an existing well already in place. I don’t see any solace for Alaska in this move.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski: How are we going to deal with these agencies? They bury us with regulations, they bury us with an inability to get the permits we need. "It’s killing our state."

Matt Felling: The Senate voted to give itself another two weeks to hammer out the 2011 budget. Just what does it say about Congress that we’re doing budgets in 14 day increments?

Sen. Lisa Murkowski:  When you think about what government is supposed to do …they expect you to put out a budget every year. "We didn’t do that…We’ve got a broken process here."

Matt Felling: Defense Secretary Gates said that if anyone suggests another Iraq or Afghanistan to a future president, he should have his head examined. Have our wars been a mistake?

Sen. Lisa Murkowski:  I don’t think I’d go so far as to mean we’ve made a mistake in our foreign policy … "We cannot expect to wage the same kind of war that we have historically going into the future."
