Municipal Election Night 2012 CoverageWin for Sullivan; loss for Prop 5RESULTS (Wednesday morning; 118 of 121 precincts): Mayor - Sullivan 59.31%; Honeman 38.2% Prop 5 - Yes 41.74%; No 58.26% For complete mayoral and school board updates click here; for propositions click here. UPDATE - For the latest from the 10 p.m. Tuesday night broadcast, click the video at left. Multiple polling places across Anchorage reported running out of ballots on Tuesday, apparently due to what seems to an unusually large voter turnout for a municipal election - 26.8% of registered voters, as of late Tuesday night. Tuesday night only electronic ballots were counted; all absentee and questioned ballots will be counted at a later date. Keep watching KTVA.com for further reports on voting issues Tuesday and why there weren't a sufficient number of ballots at polling places. ANCHORAGE (Tuesday, 4:45 p.m.) - City officials say typically voter turnout is low for municipal elections, which is interesting indeed because even before the voting began today at 7 in the morning, election officials say there are 7,600 absentee ballots – which already exceeds the early voting from the last mayoral election in 2009, when incumbent Mayor Dan Sullivan was elected. It goes beyond the two-man race for the top job in Anchorage between Sullivan and challenger assembly member Paul Honeman. Deputy Municipal Clerk Jacqueline Duke told KTVA because of misinformation election workers have an influx of thousands of questioned ballots coming in. The problem was caused by the controversial Prop 5 initiative that would add legal protections against discrimination to also include sexual orientation and transgender identity. The opponents of the proposition, led by the Alaska Family Council's Jim Minnery, put a message on its “Vote No on Prop 5” website saying people could both register to vote and cast their ballot today. That is not case as both city and state laws state you have to register at least 30 days before an election for it to count. Regardless, volunteers say the numbers coming into their precincts are very good. “There are times, depending on what people are interested in, that they will be here as early as 7 in the morning; the trend for this particular polling place is lunchtime and right after school and dinner time,” said Majorie Poggas, chair of Precinct 815 at Dimond Estates. Again, you have until 8 p.m. to cast your vote for mayor, three school board candidates, and some bonds and propositions. KTVA will have the latest results on this webpage as they begin coming in around 8:30 p.m. tonight, and at 10 p.m. on CBS 11 News. |

I guess by definition that makes both sides bigots, I see only the one side that keeps calling names and speaking harshly and trying to use the law to protect their intolerance. And the people of Anchorage was not as dumb as they thought when they brought this poorly written prop to our polls.

The dictionary definition of bigotry: "Bigotry is the state of mind of a "bigot," a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one who exhibits intolerance and animosity toward members of a group.[1] Bigotry may be directed towards those of a differing sex or sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, nationality, region, language, religious or spiritual belief, political alignment, age, economic status or medical disability. Bigotry is sometimes developed into an ideology or world view". Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. described bigots with the following quote: "The mind of a bigot is like the pupil of the eye; the more light you pour upon it, the more it will contract." What makes bigotry even more reprehensible is when it is enabled by voter fraud.

Rob, no one is stopping you from being Gay. Be Gay all you want, it's your freedom, the last time I checked you can be gay here in Anchorage. And we are not the ones trying to pass a prop to make you conform to our views. Don't shove it down the throats of people that won't agree with being gay, we should have the same right to think that way too, some of us have enough sanity to know what gender we are and don't agree with your propaganda. Y'all have a parade every year, special clubs, businesses and homes. Is it that you carry so much shame that you think your being targeted for being gay? maybe performance on the job or attitude might have something with your employment status, or, "credit" or "lack of" that keeps you from getting that apartment. Let the business owners and landlords decide what is best for them, it's their investment not yours.

Peter M. said today at 11:19 AM "that in your view LGBT people are second class citizens."....................................... ................................................. second class citizens?, not even, you people are scumbags and need to move back to cali or whatever you came from, as for the other crybabies trying to call us un-american, well that is your opinion, anchorage has spoken so GTFO.and buy the way some of us aren't even christians and we still voted no...as for rob BS on freedom? umm yeah you losers would have used this new law to take away other peoples freedom just because we didn't want your gayness around us,our jobs or where we live. plus im sure your gay leaders will find some way to sue the city, either over the ballots or some dumb reason. there some loser from South Australia saying they love gay people so maybe all of you should pack up and go there..

Funny how Christians and Republicans love to talk about freedom, and yet spend a lot of time denying freedoms to others and forcing others to comply with their viewpoints. These ignorant people are making the US look really backward. So embarrassing...

A whopping 121 people registered to vote yesteday according to the Clerk's office. Certainly not an election crashing effort as some news outlets are reporting. 121. The Clerk said they were ready for a 70% turnout. 204,838 registered voters for this election 70% of registered voters = 143,387 54,946 had been counted as of 11:48pm April 3rd If they had the full 70% printed, that means 88,441 ballots should have still been available. Where are the 88,441 ballots?

So 58% of the voters support the right to discriminate against gay people. Bravo to the people of Anchorage for your open mindedness and making it clear, that in your view LGBT people are second class citizens.

It saddened me when I saw the hateful and untrue ads Jim Minnery and his crew released. LGBT protections have nothing to do with "fake" men who want to sneak into a women's change room to get a quick peek. Prop 5 is badly needed here, if for no other reason than to protect them from these so-called "Christians."

Lots of Christian fear/lies here. Those ballots from people who registered at the polls and then voted should be thrown out. The election workers who allowed people to register the day of the election should be disciplined. And the anti American Alaska Family Council and Jim Minnery should be sued.

dr ed you and the rest of you perverts clearly don't know what the bible teaches do you? Bigots? are you serious? before you try to minister what the word says take look at Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, Deuteronomy 22:5, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Romans 1:18, 26, 27, 32. That's just to name a few. And by the way, if you are told the truth about what it says, it is out of LOVE!!! A WARNING!!! some of you can keep calling childish names and stirring up hate and we'll call you what you are too PERVERTS!!!

From far away South Australia, it is shocking to see that you continue to discriminate against GLTBI people! All Australian States and Territories have anti-discrimination laws. Shame on you all!

Prop 5 is poorly worded and scary. I for one do not want strange men who purport to be women in the locker room with me or any young ladies. This proposition is worded in a way that perverts and sexual deviants can be in the ladies room and that is dangerous. As a woman and a citizen my rights are just as important as anyone else's and I am not being bigoted or prejudicial, I am being safe. We already have laws about discrimination, we do not need laws that take way the rights of people who are in the majority in society.

Thanks Chase you summed it up. Funny how we can not agree with a certain group and we are suddenly bigots. As a former soldier I fought so people have that right to call me a bigot in English.

Chase you can have your beliefes you can nOT be a bigot!

Interesting results so far! Prop 5 being the heated topic of course as well. I voted no. Not sure where "disagreement" became hateful, bigoted, etc. I am entitled to my beliefs as any individual is to his own. There is a lot of unnecessary hatred from both sides. At the end of the day I am very tolerant of people who differ from my beliefs but that does not mean I have to change my views. Besides the word "tolerate" does not mean "accept" as it connotatively is thought of but rather holds an implication of disagreement.

There is one thing you can always count on: When it comes to immoral anti-gay campaigns, sinful anti-gay activists will ALWAYS lie. (While telling you how "Christian" they are.)

I agree Dr. Ed! The battle over Prop 5 has really shown a lot of local "christian's" true colors. I don't believe Jesus was a bigot or a hate monger.

It is simply amazing to view hypocritical so called Christian and religious organization and alleged people of faith spew their hatred, sinful judgment, and vile. Fortunately, the wicked always lose and the righteous prevail. Seems to me that the Catholic Church and the other so called religious organizations should be worried more about their redemption due the evil and carnage they have inflicted upon the masses through molesting children, abusing Native Alaskan/Native Americans, etc. instead of oppressing people. Fortunately, hatemongering No voters in Anchorage will lose this round! Amen! Amen! Amen!

I remembered this afternoon that my out of State college age daughter never got her absentee ballot that she gets sent from the the republican party as we normally did in the past, so I called the city election office around 4pm to ask what happened to it, they said hers must be in the bag of destroyed ones isseued by the republican party they got from the post office and it was too late for her to vote now, I asked they why they didnt report this to the public the guy said he didnt know. Then I called the republican party office to let them know about this the young lady that answered the phone said she never got hers back yet either, I asked her to pass this on to Randy and find out what the hell is going on in the city election office. I will be reporting this to the Alaska Postmaster to see if they know how the mailed requests got destroyed or if they delivered them in good condition and they got destroyed from the city mail room to the election office.
