ANCHORAGE - The municipal election campaign season is well under way, and candidate debates are just around the corner.

Campaign signs are out, and on Monday the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce will begin campaign forums for the general election.

Assemblyman Dick Traini again faces Andy Clary for a Midtown seat on the assembly.

Traini won by just over 100 votes in 2010.

Meanwhile, Cheryl Frasca, an appointed incumbent, has two challengers for a seat in west Anchorage.

Pollster Ivan Moore says Mayor Dan Sullivan’s controversial plan to curtail public union negotiating rights could hurt the candidacies of Clary and Frasca, with whom he is aligned.

"I think it's certainly fired up -- that was the danger about putting in before the election is -- it's definitely fired up the union folks. You can see by going down to the assembly chambers. And union folks are the kind of people you don't want to tick off right before an election. Because they can mobilize and they can be organized and they can put money into races."

School board races have attracted two former Democratic legislators, Bettye Davis and Eric Croft.

Davis faces incumbent Don Smith, also a former assemblyman and legislator.

Croft is in a three-way race with David Nees and Stephanie Cornwell-George.

Those three candidates will appear with Traini and Clary at next week's “Make it Monday” forum hosted by the Anchorage chamber.

Sounds like Unions are just like big business trying to buy elections. Unions angry... No! Say it isn't so. Maybe that's why they took down my homemade "I support Mayor Sullivan sign" that I put up next to their union support sign???
