ANCHORAGE - Dispatchers said smoke and flames were visible from blocks away when firefighters responded to a southside apartment fire earlier this morning.

The call first came in around 6:20 a.m. Saturday, and twelve crews initially responded to the building on the 8100 block of Briarwood Street, just a few blocks from the dispatch center at Fire Station 12.

While the building was evacuated, dispatchers said nobody was injured. Thirteen crews remained on scene, fighting back flames nearly an hour later, but they said the cause of the blaze is still unknown.
