Alaskan students heading off to college soon have nearly $4 million to help pay for school, thanks to the state's new merit scholarship program.

Gov. Sean Parnell’s office says 2,337 high school graduates have qualified for the scholarships, which add up to more than $4,700 a year for college or career and technical education.

That money can only be used at Alaska schools, however.

Officials with the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education say qualified students can take up to six years to use the four years of aid provided.
