An early-morning blaze at a Midtown apartment building took one person's life and sent several others to a local hospital, Anchorage firefighters said.

The call came in at 8:45 a.m, and firefighters said they arrived at the residence on the 2600 block of Homestead Ct. within minutes to find around 60 percent of the apartment building "engulfed" in flames.

With smoke pouring out of the windows and flames shooting out of the front door, firefighters said they were able to push their way into the home, where they found one person dead. Several others had already escaped from the building, including one who firefighters said jumped from a second-story window.

Firefighters are still investigating what sparked the blaze in the first place, as well as the cause of death.
